Just a couple of months after their arrival home, the Ubunye students from the 2010 expedition received these pictures showing the new Food Gardens in all their glory.
Who would have thought that the scrubby land pictured to the left could be transformed into the amazing lush, green gardens above. With just 2 weeks of hard work from a group of dedicated students from Chaucer School, many willing helpers from the Mboniselo School, the Motherwell community and the organisation www.faceafrica.com this is exactly what was achieved.
The food gardens have since gone from strength to strength, with the gardens flourishing and providing healthy nutritious vegetables for the school children and the local community. A permaculture workshop has been formed which will hopefully link the school to the surrounding community, allowing more income generating initives and long term self-reliance and sustainability. The food garden has also inspired another local school Isaac Booi Primary School to renew and expand their existing garden. This has in turn lead to the start of a food garden forum which has joined other schools together on this fantastic project. The schools have used the forum to keep in regular contact thus enabling the children to visit and help each other's garden projects to thrive and prosper.
