CHAUCER SCHOOL UBUNYE 2013
Chaucer School is a secondary school situated in the centre of the Parson Cross area in Sheffield. In Easter 2009 a small group of eight students were rewarded with a trip to South Africa after winning the Kanyekanye enterprise project. Chaucer students raised over £900 with their winning business ideas to help the community of Lesotho, in Southern Africa, in their battle against HIV/AIDS and poverty.
The students were so impressed by the local community spirit and wanted to continue their involvement by developing a sustainable project linking the two communities in future activities. So the seeds of the Ubunye Project were sown.
This has led to a expedition to South Africa in 2011 with the latest one planned for February 2013.
The 2011 expedition was a great success with the students providing a lasting legacy of a food garden for Mboniselo Public Primary School which has gone from strength to strength. The school produced enough food to use and sold the rest to the people of the Motherwell community to fund the purchasing of more seeds. Interest from the community has strengthened, allowing for more income generating initiatives and encouraging everyone to work together towards a long term goal of self-reliance and sustainability.

UBUNYE FUNDRAISING
A major part of the Ubunye Project is fundraising. Students are required to raise the majority of the expedition funding, with the charity also providing in excess of £1000 per student. The students this year have excelled in their determination to reach their own personal targets, with some students going the extra mile with unusual and novel fundraising and sponsorship ideas. This obviously takes a large amount of time and effort to raise. If you can help in any way by either donations of money or time please feel free to contact Assistant Head Teacher Gillian Ward.
